It is believed that the barnacles are generally not harmful to the whale and might possibly even be beneficial in some cases as a defense or in competition between males. Just how do these barnacles get on the whale to begin with? Barnacles seem to have quite the life indeed. These crustaceans represent a diverse group that includes more than 1,000 species. Some of these barnacles have adapted to living on marine mammals and tend to hang out on some of the baleen whales. Barnacles are often seen on crabs, whales, boats, rocks and on the shells of sea turtles.

There are around 1200 different species of Barnacles around the world. It can attach to almost anything and often spend the whole life (around 20 years) Barnacles that hitch rides on the backs of humpback and gray whales not only record details about the whales’ yearly travels, they also retain this information after they become fossilized, helping scientists reconstruct the migrations of whale populations millions of years in the past, according to a new University of California, Berkeley, study. Scarback, Depoe Bay's most famous gray whale Barnacles and whale lice are a fact of life for gray whales; there are hundreds of pounds of barnacles on gray whales. These barnacles attach themselves to gray whales in the lagoons when the whales are born.

They do! Check out what our Lead Naturalist Guide, Keith had to say about it when OCCURRENCE OF THE BARNACLES CORONULA DIADEMA, C. REGINAE AND CETOPIRUS COMPLANATUS (CIRRIPEDIA) ON RIGHT WHALES JAMES E. SCARFF* ABSTRACT On 20 March 1982, a right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) was observed off Half Moon Bay, California (37°30'N, 122°03'W).

These crustaceans represent a diverse group that includes more than 1,000 species. Some of these barnacles have adapted to living on marine mammals and tend to hang out on some of the baleen whales. Barnacles are often seen on crabs, whales, boats, rocks and on the shells of sea turtles. Although some species of barnacle are parasitic, most barnacle species are harmless, because they are filter feeders and do not interfere with an animal's normal diet and do not harm that animal that they live on in any way. Whale barnacles feed by passively filtering food through tentacles-like cirri, while its host swims through water. Some whales use the barnacles to provide security while fighting with others, which is also beneficial to barnacles since they mostly depend on whales as parasites.

Barnacles are tiny living creatures (critters) in the water, comparable to very small-sized lobsters and shrimps. They tend to attack (stick or attach to) firm and solid surfaces such as boats, piers, whales, rocks, turtles, etc. So, it has nothing to do only with the boats; they attach to firm surfaces. Barnacles living on whales, turtles, manatees and other creatures stay on for different lengths of time. It depends on several factors. Gray Whale expert Dave Rugh from National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle, WA, says slower whales (like gray whales) have more barnacles than fast cetaceans (like dolphins).

As an aside, it’s worth noting that unlike whale lice, barnacles don’t feed on the whales.

(That may sound burdensome, but relative to a humpback’s nearly 80,000-pound body, it’s about as much extra weight as summer clothing on a human being.) The living barnacle is the light yellow colored membrane, with the open cirria or filter membrane showing inside. There are three large (about 1/2 “ to 1” long) whale lice in the space between the barnacle and the barnacle shell. The darker gray color is the barnacle shell. For the most part, whale barnacles are harmless, even in astoundingly large numbers.
